Whether it’s diving to the deepest depths of the ocean, breaking the sound barrier for the first time, or as this ad highlights, being the first to reach Earth’s highest peak, Rolex always seems to be there. In 1953 Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay summoned not only their will to achieve, but their will to survive, in order to ultimately summit Mt. Everest. 60 years later, this carefully worded 2013 Rolex advertisement describes the role Rolex played in the successful ascent by Sir John Hunt's expedition. Aside from the conquest being an inspiring human feat, it may very well be the inspiration for Rolex developing the Explorer model. From the earliest Explorer Ref. 6150 to the 39mm Ref. 214270 pictured in this advertisement, the model has always been well-known and appreciated for its clean dial designed for legibility in adverse conditions. Besides the history lesson and being a prime example of classic Rolex marketing, I love that this ad is also a call to action... The headline "The higher we climb, the more we overcome" and the line “TIME TO EXPLORE” are motivating messages about how to approach life... Whether you're exploring the peaks of Everest, or more likely a new city, the Explorer is clearly a great choice as you traverse the unknown.
