Good advertising is more than attention-getting. Good advertising ropes you in. And it's easy to get caught up in 1990s Land Rover advertising. These ads paved the road for people to own and restore old Defenders, Discoverys and Range Rovers. A lot of the reasons and inspiration for driving Land Rovers comes from the messaging in the ads. Messaging in the form of clever copy and smartly-curated art direction. Just look at this ad, which stands as possibly the only one for the Defender 110. And being from 1992 it can certainly be considered the very-first ad for the North American Specification (NAS) 110, which was introduced in 1993. But this advertisement also stands as one of the best Rover ads of all-time... It's just beautiful how perfectly the headline about "legendary forms of jungle transportation" ties in with the photoshoot of the Defender and vine. And that photo, reminiscent of the 1987 ad introducing the Range Rover to the U.S. market, is set against an all white background. The negative space providing a stark contrast that lets the truck and communication shine. Also, the design makes the ad a particularly good one to frame. For Defender devotees this ad represents a landmark for the brand. But it's also a work of art representing the creative geniuses at Grace & Rothschild, the agency that sparked a love affair and ignited a passion that's stronger than ever today.
