Story and Details

Nike is such a powerful brand. It’s actually transcended being a brand and become a way of life for so many - even a religion. It’s known the world over and has an immortal place in not just sports history, but also fashion and everyday life. Nike’s products have changed the game and culture so much that it’s easy to forget its Oregon origins…

This 1975 advertisement reminds us of the humble beginnings of Nike - before their sneakers ever had air in them. Almost inconceivably, it’s from when the company was launching out of the starting blocks - mainly targeting runners.

Prior to 1976, Nike print ads were created in-house by Jeff Johnson and/or Phil Knight. Carolyn Davidson, who famously designed the Swoosh in 1971, also helped create ads until around 1975. Nike didn’t hire its first outside agency, Morton Advertising, until late 1975. So it’s very-possible Ms. Davidson had a hand in designing this very ad.

What stands out about this ad is it’s strictly informational. The first "motivational" Nike tagline doesn’t happen until 1977, when John Brown & Partners pens the incredible “There Is No Finish Line” ad.

Much of the company lore we’re familiar with is spelled out matter-of-factly in this one page ad. It’s truly a sacred artifact that reads like the CliffsNotes of Phil Knight’s incredible memoir Shoe Dog.

    The details are the design

Nick really honored the Ray/Charles Eames's quote of "the details are not the details, they make the design" here. I picked up a copy of this at WindUp, fully framed, and the aesthetic choices Nick made really elevated the entire thing, from the color of the wood, the grain, to the choice of matte. I could not be happier at Nick's choices and how thoughtful they were.
