Story and Details

The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman is a Grail for many. It remains basically unchanged since its debut in 1956 - a testament to its great design. It’s no longer just a super-comfortable piece of furniture, or as Charles and Ray Eames describe it, “a special refuge from the strains of modern living.” It’s become a piece of decor that rooms - homes - are designed around.

This original advertisement from 1969 visually captures Charles and Ray’s comfy creation the way many of us see it today - as the pièce de résistance of a room. It’s a joy to look at as much as it is to sit in.

While it’s known that industrial designer Irving Harper created the Herman Miller logo, a red letter M, it’s unclear who designed this particular advertisement… It could be the work of either Tomoko Miho or Deborah Sussman - both accomplished graphic artists.

In the late 1960 and early 1970s, Miho worked on advertisements for Herman Miller, working under George Nelson. And then continued sporadic work for the furniture company in collaboration with John Massey and eventually through her own design firm.

Sussman started out working directly with Charles and Ray Eames doing a bit of everything, including designing notable advertisements through the early 1960s. She later did work for Herman Miller in partnership with designer Alexander Girard.

I am absolutely in love with the piece I purchased from Nick. He customized teal suede matte with a light gold frame and it is so beautiful and compliments the piece so well! Can't wait to purchase another ad from Ad Patina

    Spectacular

This is my 6th piece from Nick and first non-watch ad. As usual I’m blown away by both the condition of the ad and the high quality framing job. This is a labor of love for Nick and it clearly shows in every piece I am fortunate enough to have. Don’t miss your chance to pick up something very special from yesteryear and make sure you work with Nick to frame it. You won’t be disappointed.

    10/10 every time!

Nick always crushes the job! Completely nails the balance of art and energy - vintage ads that feel fresh. I give these as gifts to clients, friends and...myself (a lot). Keep it up Nick and thank you!

PS - he makes the process personal and easy, a pleasure to work with.
